Text Box:            While everyone recognizes the risks and dangers inherent in using some items, such as a weapon or an automobile, most find it more difficult to see serious risks in other products, particularly those products that are used by others—like their children.  The Consumer Products Safety Commission (the “CPSC”) has been appointed by Congress to oversee product safety in the United States.  A part of the CPSC’s job is to monitor and test products in an effort to discover defective or dangerous products.
The CPSC has the authority to force recall, and ultimately repair or replacement, of consumer products which prove to be unreasonable dangers to public health.  Because children are the most innocent and unwary of all consumers, the CPSC  takes particular interest in products that affect them.
Product recalls are announced by press releases.  These releases are usually relayed to the public by the media.  If a product is the type which has been registered with the manufacturer, the owner is usually contacted directly by the manufacturer to arrange for repair or replacement.  Retailers are required to cease sales of the recalled items, and return their unused inventories to the manufacturer.  This process is effective to remove most defective products from the marketplace.  For those few items which are not actually recovered from the end user, the CPSC maintains a website which contains a description of all recalled products by type.
